In the Winter Gardens

25 June 2016

On Saturday 25 June, members of the SpermNMR team participated in the MRC festival of science, which took place in Winter Gardens in Sheffield. We were there to talk about sperm (what else is there to talk about?).

This was part of a series of national events around the country to celebrate and explain the fantastic research that the Medical Research Council is funding in UK Universities.

We had sperm samples to view down a microscope so the public could see sperm swimming for themselves. We also allowed people to run a practice experiment using our “portable spectrometer”. There were also some light-hearted activities including match the sperm to the animal and guess what’s wrong with this sperm.

Several other MRC funded research teams were there from the University of Sheffield talking about using stem cell and treatments for deafness, bacteria infections and how to treat them, arthritis and how to image the lungs.

It was estimated that approximately 500 people came to the event and we hope we made them more aware of our research and the issue of male fertility.

We hope to see you at the next event.
